Attention programmers; a new open source programming language called Go has been launched by none other than those innovators at Google. Why?

Because no significant language has come to the fore in the last decade, while many changes have occurred on the web during that time. Google are known to prefer Python and Javascript, therefore Go is expected to resemble a combination of both, as well as its own flavour.

A more than 1000% growth of Twitter over Facebook causes different reactions; some are happy to know that over 800,000 Aussies are now active on Twitter, while other consider this a typical figure for the later-released Twitter, which is still way behind the 6,000,000 Australian users of Facebook.

While the first finding's reasons can be argued, the next finding cannot. That internet usage in Australia is growing rapidly. 75% of adults use social networks in Australia. Australia has over 400,000 bloggers. People spent on average 8.9 hours per week (or 1.5 days a month) using the web, which is up 27% compared to previous years - significantly, this is more time than Australians spent reading print media, watching movies, or playing video games.

It has long been said that it takes two to tango. Web development is exactly like that. Web design cannot do it alone without backend support. But to a majority of users, website design has a big space in their consciousness; for them it is dependent on whether a certain site will be a success or a failure.

There is a sudden surge in demand for a beautifully made websites. Users don't want poor presentations anymore; they all like something else, something new to their eyes because they have become web-sophisticated. With the advent of css 3, almost any kind of design is now possible in web. It's like photoshopping your way to the world wide web.

True Beauty Comes From The Inside

Informed web designers and business owners alike know that design is vital to a successful website, and its beauty must go far beyond looks. While design needs to support a company's brand positioning, it must also effectively inform, communicate and provide positive experiences.

3 things to consider when typing copy for your website

If you have read any of my blogs, you will know that when forming a strategy for your website, you must have 'traffic' in mind - specifically, how you plan to attract traffic to your website. Google, Bing and other search engines remain the single most potent source of traffic delivery to all websites.

For this reason, it is important that when you are typing content for your website, you consider Google and other search engines as much as your customer, who will eventually read it.

Here are my top 3 tips to consider when typing copy for your website:

A page for each keyword

It may seem an attractive proposition to litter your Homepage, or Services page, with all your important keywords.

This will only confuse search engine spiders. It is important to give each of your keywords their own page, and by showing these keywords such respect, you will encourage search engines like Google to do likewise.

The web has evolved a lot since its boom in the late 90s. Especially web typography. Web typography deals with the font usage among websites. The clearer the font, the better.

Web typography deals with the line-height, text-spacing and colour, which are all text properties. Font styles and usage will greatly affect the design of a website as a whole. It can be boring or exciting.

There are still advancements in web typography, including using the image replacement technique. Using css, some use images rather than web type fonts. It enhances someone's site significantly. Of course the negative of this option is that text within images are not readable by search engines.

Regardless, good old web type fonts are best for corporate websites after a clean look.

With fonts like Arial and Times New Roman considered "default" fonts for some, there are other alternative fonts that web designers should consider. Here are my Top 5 (in no particular order):

Google Wave is, as according to co-architect Lars Rasmussen, what email would be if it were invented today.

As written in my personal blog review of Google Wave, Google Wave collaborates all modes of internet communication into one common 'inbox'. These modes include email, instant messaging, blogging, tweeting, networking, etc.

As far as its methods... Google Wave allows you to do the above using web-exclusive technologies which allow for the live transfer of this data, the use of drag-and-drop for easy-adding, etc.

Most impressive is that it is 'open source', with Google inviting unlimited developers like my team at KayWeb Sydney to develop extensions which will continue to improve Google Wave for users.

Please put 1hr 20 minutes aside and watch the following video. This is an excellent demo led by Rasmussen, who also helped buit Google Maps, himself at the Google IO developer conference.

Microsoft pins search hopes on Bing

I blogged at haigkayserian.com.au last week about the pending release of Bing; Microsoft's new search engine and the company's latest attempt to win some market share over the globally-dominant Google.

Since that blog, Microsoft has released a video previewing the features of Bing, which they are pinning their hopes on to drift internet searchers to this engine. Click here to see video.

Despite this clever marketing, my opinion - as well as those of other search engine experts - remains unchanged.

As web designers, I think we all have experienced the hard task of finding new ideas and inspiration. Read on to find out how my work habits and how the environment influence my design.

Working at home kills your creativity.

My work habits and environment have a big influence on my work. So I’m going to talk about my work environment first.

Being a full-time designer, I get to work at the office and surf the web for the next big thing. Personally, I find it very boring working at home. I can lose my focus and concentration on the design I'm doing. To think about it, how can you find new ideas if you are constantly facing your work and computer.

Yes, you can browse the web or CSS gallery sites such as Best Web Gallery to find inspiration. But since my work is web design, I also prefer to find inspiration offline (this way I can avoid being overly inspired by other websites).

Wow! Back in the office after 3 days at CeBIT in Sydney! The first day spent on the floor surveying the offerings (and the competition). Then attending the Web Forward sessions which was keynoted by Google, who were never too far from peoples minds.

It's easy to get complacent while listening to the large organisations that shared some of their secrets. Our focus, however, is on how small to medium-sized businesses can take advantage of this technology. The main themes: mobile presence, SEO-ing sites and usability.

Especially for retailers, the location-aware capabilities of the iPhone and other mobiles are being utilised to attract customers already away from home. This often takes the form of special pages for mobile, and participating in directories where for mobile, google is not the only viable engine.

We all know Facebook has captured the attention of internet users. In fact, this interesting social networking giant has encouraged the handful of people who hadn't yet dabbled with the net to jump on and 'network'.

Facebook currently has 175 million registered users, who log in and view things others in their network decide to share - including photos, videos and dialogue with others they are connected to.

Among the successes of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his team of tech geeks have been their ability to educate the masses on certain web technologies.

CSS or Cascading Style Sheets is a stylesheet language used to describe the presentation of a document written in a markup language. Its most common application is to be used in HTML and XHTML respectively. It can also be used in XML.

Uses

CSS can be used to define colors, fonts, layout, and other aspects of document presentation in a web page. It is designed primarily to enable the separation of document content (written in HTML or a similar markup language) from document presentation (written in CSS). This separation can improve content accessibility, provide more flexibility and control presentation characteristics, and reduce complexity and repetition in the structural content (such as by allowing for tableless web design). CSS can also allow the same markup page to be presented in different styles for different rendering methods, such as on-screen, in print, by voice (when read out by a speech-based browser or screen reader) and on Braille-based, tactile devices. CSS also allows authors to move much of that information to a separate stylesheet resulting in considerably simpler HTML markup.

The reason for this was that Obama's website won their WebAward over John McCain's website!

The decision to award www.barackobama.com the gong for 'Better Website' was made by 110 internet website experts, who sit on the Web Marketing Association's WebAward judging panel. And the fact that this same crew voted for Obama's website as 'better than Hillary Clinton's' during the Democratic primaries, and Obama ended up defeating Clinton, could mean the same path is set for November 4.

Let's take a closer look at both barackobama.com and johnmccain.com...

A month since its trial release, Google's Chrome web browser is gaining mixed reviews by web analysts. According to some users, Google Chrome is super-fast and easy to use; others complain that it is too bare, while competitors state their own products remain superior in the newly-congested browser market.

My personal tests of Chrome have been extremely positive, considering it is its VERSION 1 release. Google has again embraced the advantages of open source web development to deliver a product in a rare segment of the web they haven't yet cracked.

1. Splash Page

I’ve seen this mistake many times, where people put up a big banner image and a link "Click here to enter" on their homepage. The worst case — the "enter" link is embedded in the Flash object, which makes it impossible for the search engine spiders to follow the link.

This is fine if you don’t care about what a search engine knows about your site; otherwise you’re making a BIG mistake. Your homepage is most likely your website’s highest ranking page, thus is crawled most frequently by spiders. Your internal pages will not appear in the search engine index without the proper linking structure to internal pages for the spider to follow. Your homepage should include (at minimum) target keywords and links to important pages.

You may have heard terms like CSS, Strong Tags, Titles, URLs, Meta Tags, etc without really understanding them. The key is not for you to understand them, but for you to make sure your web designers know them... and more importantly, use them!

For this reason, designers create typographic contrast and flow by emphasising certain text. Contrast is important because not all content within a page have the same value; some have greater significance than others.
